Nutri-Sport Supplement Tip: Part 2-Performance

In part 1 of this series we covered what the foundational supplements where.  In review here is the list:

  • Multi-vitamin
  • Omega 3
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin D
  • B-Complex
  • Glucosamin
  • Psyllium Husk

In part 2 we want to cover those supplements that we feel have a more performance enhancement function after the foundation is laid with the above.  One thing to consider when speaking of supplements to boost performance is that they need to be tailored to the type of activity.  For example, the stacks for an endurance, powerlifting and bodybuilding athlete will have some similarities but also some differences.   The below mentioned stack is geared for a strength athlete and would also be appropriate for a bodybuilding athlete.

Supplements for performance

Supplements for performance

  • Whey protein: A given as without adequate protein in the diet, your body doesn’t have the nutrition it needs to repair.  While whole food is important, the advantage of whey is the easy digestion and high concentration of amino acids.

BCAAs: Research has shown that when it comes to protein, the BCAAs are one of the key factors in how anabolic it is.  Additionally, because your body can convert to instant energy, it’s great to sip on while training.

Creatine: The juggernaut of performance supplements, this has more studies behind it showing it’s effectiveness in gaining strength and muscle.  Definitely on the list.

Beta alanine: Show to decrease fatigue, if you want to reduce that “burn” and get a couple more reps (without water retention those who have to make weight) this is a great staple.  If you’re a wrestler or fighter, you should be using this (it’s in a lot of pre-workouts too so don’t double up pre workout).

TMG: Also known as Trimethylglycine or betaine anhydrous, studies have shown an increase in muscle mass and strength.  Not too mention, good for the digestion and liver.

DAA: Or D-Aspartic Acid, is the most-proven natural testosterone booster.  Working with your body (verses the harshness of pro-hormones) this is an effective way to help make sure your levels are naturally where they should be.

L-leucine: One of the 3 BCAAs, this is the main indicator of how anabolic whey can be.  3 grams is the optimal dosage and most whey proteins only have 2 in a full serving (we recommend 1/4 tsp to a serving of whey).

ZMA: The two basic ingredients, zinc and magnesium are really an insurance policy to make sure your body is getting adequate amounts of each.  Zinc if deficient can lower testosterone and immune functions.  The magnesium has a calming effect, which taken before bed can help get more restful sleep which equals to recovery.

Preworkout: We purposefully left this to the end as a lot of people miss things that would better match their goals but they go straight to the pre-workout as they like the feeling.  Certainly it helps to increase energy, reduce fatigue, help improve focus, but shouldn’t be put as the end-all to be-all.

You’ll notice that each of the above supplements has a link to more information that you can go read more specifics about them.  As stated before, make sure you have the foundation in place, then look to these (and other) supplements as they pertain to YOUR specific goals.  One of our Nutrition Consultants can help you figure out what not only helps you reach your goals but also maximize your budget based on priority.

As with everything, consistency is key, so don’t neglect nutrition and training in the process.
